What is your best?
Do you do your best?
Today I watched my son compete at State for Track & Field in pole vault. His personal record is 13’2.” Today as he competed, he made 13’ and then, continued on to try to beat his personal record, aiming for 4” higher.
I want to say, “sadly, he did not get a PR” but when I really think about it, it wasn’t sad.
He did his best AND he did not get a personal record. And that’s great.
He did his best for TODAY. And it wasn’t his record, or higher, and that’s okay.
Afterwards, when we talked to him, he said he was okay. He was content!
I was impressed.
What would my life and your life be like, as moms, if we could see that we might have a personal record on how great of a mom you were or person you were? And it may be pretty stinkin’ awesome.
AND that you can do your best and it may not reach or exceed that Personal Record and it is still enough.
What if you could see that in your daily life?
Having a personal record is not the same as doing and being your best.
Don’t confuse the two.
If you are aiming to do your personal best, if you do not “reach” that, it implies that it’s not good enough… that you didn’t try hard enough… or at least you just didn’t do your best.
But what if you DID do your best?? For that day and those specific circumstances and the particular subject matter. What if you did do your best? And you still appear to have “failed”?
Your best varies.
Year by year, day by day, even minute by minute.
Your “personal record” will always be that. An ultimate high. An amazing achievement.
BUT you aren’t less of a mom or person because you don’t hit that mark every day!
It might be fun but it wouldn’t be life if you always hit those highs or personal bests!
And there definitely wouldn’t be much growing that actually happened.
For today, for my son, his best was 13’. Last week, it was 12’ 8”, a few weeks prior it was 13’2.”
Remember, you have a “personal record” to aim for at all times, to work hard to achieve again, but in the meantime, your “BEST” is going to vary, day to day and minute to minute.
Don’t beat yourself up for that.
That’s how you learn and grow.
That’s how life stays interesting.
And that is how you get better and better at doing your best and getting new PR’s.
You are doing enough.
You are succeeding.
You’ve got this.
Just keep doing your best by aiming for a personal record but being happy with giving it your all, wherever that lands you.
